Surveys conducted with thousands of athletes and students reveal the characteristics of the most accomplished coaches and teachers. This seminar will explain and examine the top ten characteristics. We will do one exercise to help you identify the attributes that are your strengths so you can emphasize them for more effective, memorable and inspirational coaching.

Kirk Anderson began his career as a physical educator and taught tennis for more than fifty years in schools, parks, camps, resorts, prisons, and clubs. He coached young players, middle and high school players, adults, seniors, and nationally ranked juniors. He worked with players with intellectual disabilities through Special Olympics and with our Wounded Warriors. He served as the Department Director for Coach Education at the United States Tennis Association for twenty years and retired in September 2016.He has a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. 

Kirk is classified as a Master Professional by both the United States Professional Tennis Association and the Professional Tennis Registry, and is a graduate of the United States Tennis Associations High Performance Coach program.

As a coach educator, Kirk wrote nine instructional books and worked as the project manager for eight online courses. The courses and workshops have been completed by over 100,000 tennis coaches and teaching professionals for certification or continuing education.

Anderson served on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Tennis Participation Task Force, the Special Olympics International Global Resource Tennis Team, and the Special Olympics North America Tennis Development Committee. Anderson participated in three “Let’s Move!” events with First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington DC, New York City, and London, England.

Kirk has presented at international, national and regional workshops. He was a featured speaker at three ITF Tennis Coaches Workshops held in Bath and London, England, and has presented in Norway, India, the Netherlands, China, Mexico, and Canada.

In 2003, Anderson received the International Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award, was named Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry magazine in 2006, the Professional Tennis Registry Professional of the Year in 2012, and the United States Professional Tennis Association Professional of the Year in 2016. He was inducted into the Western Michigan University Department of Human Performance and Health Education Alumni Honor Academy in 2013, and the Parchment Community Hall of Fame in 2017.
