Careers in Tennis

If you played tennis in college or as a hobby, are you interested in taking advantage of those skills? Did you know there are many other ways to make great money in a tennis-based career besides playing professionally?

The top players, for example, had to first be taught tennis, and there has never been a greater demand for tennis teachers than today as the sport's popularity rapidly increases throughout the U.S. and the world.

If teaching and working to improve a player’s skill level is something that appeals to you, it’s easy to get started and on the path to a successful and rewarding career by becoming a certified USPTA Professional. In the same way a college degree proves to employers you have the knowledge and skills they are hiring you for, becoming USPTA-certified lets clubs know you have passed theoretical and practical testing to demonstrate your tennis and teaching skills. Many jobs require you to be certified, and the smiles of the kids and adults whose games you are responsible for improving – not to mention the health benefits from staying active – will make it all worth it.

Plus, unlike a college degree, it doesn’t take years to become USPTA-certified. In fact, depending on your knowledge base, skills, and the time you can afford to study, becoming a certified pro can take a matter of weeks! You will then be qualified for a wide range of teaching positions at clubs and resorts, but it doesn’t end there. USPTA Pros are afforded more opportunities to climb to higher ranks in the industry, becoming Head Professionals, Directors of Tennis and even Club Managers. Current USPTA Pros have become top officers in companies such as USTA and TIA and they all started out by passing our exams and teaching tennis to students.

Coaches who choose to remain uncertified face great challenges when many of their peers have shown a greater commitment to the sport. Employers recognize this. Simply put, there is no faster and easier way to kick-start a long and successful career in tennis than through USPTA.

Career Choices

USPTA professionals have job titles including general manager, director of tennis, assistant professional and coach. They direct tennis businesses, develop tennis programming, oversee tennis operations, teach lessons and coach individual players and teams. They perform their jobs at all types of facilities, such as private and commercial clubs, public tennis centers and parks, colleges and schools.

USPTA members also work as pro shop owners, manufacturers, manufacturer representatives, club managers and association executives. Other members use their tennis backgrounds to work as sport psychologists, nutrition experts, television executives and more.

The following is a list of common job titles and responsibilities for USPTA members based on their certification ratings or status. These descriptions do not reflect all possible variances to customary jobs for USPTA professionals.

Master Professional (Must achieve tested rating of Elite Professional, plus have remarkable achievements in teaching, playing, industry service and education.)

Direct tennis programs, develop lesson programs, manage pro shops and tennis facility operations, direct activities, handle administrative duties, such as hiring, developing budgets, directing communications, serving as integral part of professional management team

Elite Professional (highest tested rating)

Head tennis professional, associate professional, assistant professional

Organize and implement tennis programs, assist with and develop competitive players, assist with and/or direct pro shop management, facility maintenance, conduct private and group lessons, assist with tennis programs


High school coach, part-time teacher/coach

Assist full-time staff with camps, group lessons and other grassroots programming

Recreational Coaches (nontested)

Director of Membership and Certification
The Director of Membership and Certification oversees a wide range of Membership Department functions including testing, certification, and membership services. This position also serves as the staff liaison to the Membership Committee, Testing Committee, and Master Professional Committee. Learn more

Membership Services Coordinator
The Membership Services Coordinator plays a key role in promoting the benefits of USPTA membership as well as servicing the needs of our current and future members. This position is responsible for answering all membership inquires as well as processing current, new, or future members. Learn more.

Front Desk Coordinator
The Front Desk Coordinator provides general office support with a variety of clerical activities and related tasks for the USPTA. This position is responsible for answering incoming calls, directing calls to appropriate departments, distribution of mail, maintaining office and break room supplies as well as additional clerical duties. Continuing Education Coordinator
The Continuing Education Coordinator provides general administrative support to the USPTA Education Department. This position is responsible for answering education inquiries, processing continuing education credits, and maintaining education database records. Learn more.

Director of Finance
The Director of Finance manages the Accounting Department and Human Resources Manager as well as performing specific accounting functions for the USPTA. Learn more.

Accounting Clerk
The Accounting Clerk assists the director of finance and controller with accounting functions as well as providing assistance in non-accounting related areas. Learn more.

Director of Communications
The Director of Communications manages the communications department, including publications, public relations and graphic design, and oversees all written projects produced by the USPTA. This position is also responsible for the maintenance of USPTA websites and the coordination of all member communications. Learn more.

Public Relations Coordinator
The Public Relations Coordinator plays a key role in the public relations efforts of the USPTA including the creation and implementation of campaigns that promote the association’s mission. Learn more.

Publications and Communications Coordinator
The Publications and Communications Coordinator manages and coordinates USPTA publications including ADDvantage, the USPTA World Conference program, awards program, online publications, and special projects. This position is also responsible for the writing and editing of assigned projects. Graphic Design Specialist
The Graphic Design Specialist creates and overseas all graphic design needs and requirements for the USPTA. This position uses knowledge of current graphic design software to produce graphic art and visual materials for promotions, advertisements, films, packaging, and informative and instructional material through a variety of media outlets such as websites, magazines and DVDs. Video Production Manager
The Video Production Manager is in charge all multimedia video productions for the USPTA and any third parties. This position manages the creative and technical aspects of the video production process including producing, directing, shooting, and editing video and audio projects. Learn more.

Member & Computer Services Coordinator
The Member & Computer Services Coordinator performs all computer functions necessary to service membership, divisions and committees. This position manages the annual dues billing process, tracks and reports membership changes and other special projects as requested. Learn more.
